As part of Mayo Clinic’s Anatomic Modeling Unit, I design various guides for surgical cases, like this series of 3D printed guides for osteotomy and graft placement for a clavicle malunion corrective surgery. The plan is developed with the lead surgeon for the case and one or more clinical engineers. In this instance the case requires guides for performing osteotomies on the graft and the malunion, distracting and rotating the lateral clavicle segment, installing an autograft, and then clamping that graft in place while the site is plated. This guide set is stackable, allowing the initial osteotomy guide to be located and fixated to the bone and remain in place through subsequent steps while additional guide elements are stacked onto those bases to perform pre-planned rotation, distraction, graft placement, and clamping.
